Latest Android updates

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 07/02/2019. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Thanks for the update.

What happened to 9.0.0.146 for the m20p??  It now states "Upgrade to 9.0.0.183" which im sure we are all grateful for but no mention of .146 as previous version states. .126. Hopefully just a typo?

I'm seconding @garvanii here..

Are we just pretending .146 doesn't exist now? Information on last week's update seems to indicate testing was completed, and people who'd spoken with Huawei were just waiting on the green light to deploy it,

@Dan_C can we get a firm timeline on what's going on with that?

garvanii

Oh dear..

From XDA: Poster received this from optus rep
This is what I recieved internally from our Tech devs,

For Australian carriers, Huawei will release MR every 2 months. They do not know the release details until about 1 month before the release. They have skipped .146 and .183 because they did not meet Optus requirements. We are going to get .188 for testing which is the later version than .183. The only way for the customer to get .183 is to buy an open market handset.

We really need some official comment dan_c. Because that supposed email contradicts the above update of .183

You havn't just canned the 0.146 update, theres going to be blood in the water if you have. As the next update will be what 3 months away?

Hey guys just to clarify,

The only way for the customer to get .183 is to buy an open market handset. " that's in regards to having it already before the curent testing that's underway for .183

Can I put my hand up at this point and point out that I'm a tester for a living, and I'd be happy to join your testing team to get this out for the Mate20

Ok by completely avoiding the .146 questions i think its safe to assume its been cancelled.

You are a brave man dan_c ill give you that, im sure the decision has absolutley nothing to do with you and your just the messenger but wow. I thought the backlash on these updates was already bad enough but you've outdone yourself here.

Hey @Dan_C, the tech email says that .183 has been skipped as it didn't meet Optus' requirements.   What requirements did it not meet?   It doesn't say that it's being tested as per the blog entry so it would be nice to get a clear and consistent answer.

With regards to getting hold of the .188 base firmware (LYA-LGRP-OVS 9.0.0.188), it's been available for weeks online but if you dont have it yet, when are you expecting to get it and how long to test before acceptance and application of your branding?  We obvioulsy can't just apply the stock firmware due to not having the Optus CUST and PRELOAD files (or rather we can, but things like Google Pay wont work) so we are trapped here.

We know that this is not something that the TIO will handle as this stuff is classed as a commercial decision but it's definitely not helping your brand.   If your testing guys did what they needed to do with .188 quickly and turned it around you could go from being the slowest authoriser of critical updates to the fastest.   Even better, debrand as part of the next update and then it wont be your issue later on. Smiley Happy

What does this mean for the Mate 20 Pro? Daily I'm being frustrated with the constant bugs of camera crsshes (can't connect to camera error), pictures not saving, multitasking bugs, the list goes on. Did I mention I'm paying a premium price for a flagship device? Look at the support and updates Huawei is releasing for the device, they're doing the best the can to show off the device in the best light possible well after launch, and yet here in Australia we pay top dollar for a second rate service. Do a google search for "Optus Mate 20 Pro update" and any reasonable person could see why so many customers are frustrated with a passion. There is no excuse about not meeting standards, every other major carrier is miles ahead of Optus. I highly suspect the heavily delayed update deployment is due to understaffing in the Optus android department.

They are now updating to the second most recent update. However in the process of doing so they scrapped the .146 update that was supposed to go live last week.

The $$$ question now is how long before this update is available.

@escaflo True I think your on a winner. The next report will say .188 was not compatible with optus.

This is just a big joke, now the blog states .183 mid to late February. But .183 has been scrapped and .188 is meant to be working on testing, but as stated in a message to me on Friday optus are getting 188 so highly doubtful from the speed optus work at that this is going to be anywhere close to late February probably April.

@smate All previous software updates (camera etc) will included in our update, they are incremental updates. 183 contains .146, .153 etc

@garvanii True, but as of Friday they didn't have.188 for testing and there is approx 2 weeks left in February, I very much doubt that testing can be completed and the firmware pushed to the handsets in this time. Even if it's tested by the end of February, you won't see it until mid March.

@Dazkatmaka11 @Dan_C @Optus@ so spoke with my huawei case manager the other night and they were quite surprised and agitated when I told them that optus had abandoned 9.0.0.146 after optus having told customers that testing was completed and then left the same customers hanging. Huawei were escalating the matter of the abandoned firmware. The problem is our handsets are branded so the firmware will always need to be ran through optus first even if the firmware team was to leave it unaltered (as they should because it's OUR property)

On something that might not go ahead? Are you delusional, the firmware has to be updated.

I think that Optus need to sort something out right now instead of waiting.

Everyone who has a Mate 20 Pro, we need to start asking for compensation until this is resolved. Optus might then start pulling the finger out if it is going to cost them money.

Optus headquarters senior manager Leslie has just informed me that 2 things are happening, optus has not been issued a licence for the firmware update and huawei are refusing to supply the firmware. Received an email Cassandra Ludwig Optus Resolution manager

She just said optus have provided you with the tools to check the status of Updates and points a link to the blog.

Here is my response

If you read the blog you will see that two firmware updates were abandoned and the current blog is incorrect

It states that 9.0.0.126 is the current version, when infact the firmware version is 9.0.0.122

It stated in November that .126 was being tested, this was never received.

It then stated that .146 was tested for 8 weeks and had been completed and sent for release, this has now been abandoned.

The current version testing state's .183 this is incorrect information as Alistair has advised see next paragraph of the message sent by him to me. He has also stated that he will be issuing a credit every month until the firmware update is received by my phone.

Hey Darren
This is what I recieved internally from our Tech devs,

For Australian carriers, Huawei will release MR every 2 months. They do not know the release details until about 1 month before the release. The only way for the customer to get .183 is to buy an open market handset.

The tools provided are useless and full of lies

Optus advised me yesterday that they don't have or ever had a software licence from Huawei and that huawei have not sent optus any firmwares.

It was also mentioned that optus have abandoned huawei because of the world 5G spying saga because of privacy concerns.

I have contacted huawei directly and are sorting out situation with huawei.

I have also contacted the consumer affairs Vic and they have this case. They said that I put it in writing to optus and should you not reply or come to a resolution of my choice, they will forward the matter to VCAT COURTS. Consider this my written request.

I request for the .188 firmware version to be delivered to my phone by the last day of February 2019. Alternatively you authorise Huawei to unbrand and send the latest firmware version to my phone immediately.

@Mekamayhem @Dazkatmaka11

Optus are under no obligation to provide firmware updates. As the TIO has asked, please explain exactly where Optus has broken a crontractual obligation (TIO largely looks at the econtract - no internet = broken contract, no firmware update = no issue).

If you want immeadiate updates then I'd suggest you look into getting a Google Phone.

Peter Gillespie

NBn Take what customer service agents say with a grain of salt (esp. when they are complete contradictory). For example the Huwei issue involves network equipment. There is no issue with Huwei selling handsets and they are extremely popular units. I'd be surprised if Optus decides to stop selling such a good performer.

Dazkatmaka11
by Frequent Contributor
Friday

@petergdownload actually in my case they are breaking the contractual obligations because the firmware is having call dropping and cinnectivcon issues, huawei have already stated this is because of the firmware version and a later version specifically addressed this issue.

And for your information Pixel Phones are now updated via ptus firmware testing just like all other handsets.

Get your facts right before commenting.

@Dazkatmaka11

Still nothing to do with your contract. You might have some redress under statutory rights but a minor issue like occasional call dropouts would be hard to press on a mobile phone. Your'e free to take whatever actions you want, I'm just suggesting they're likely to be ineffective.

FWIW my pixel phone updates every month with the latest FW and I use Optus. I'm a bit bewildered why Optus would chose to insert themselves into what is already a seemless process, but what I'm suggesting is buy a Pixel phone (not get one that it appears is locked down by Optus now.)

@petergdownload Actually people who are more qualified than you have advised that it is a contractual obligation and are taking action, TIO ombudsman and consumer affairs Vic

So unless you are qualified in consumer Law don't assume that you know.

I've been disappointed in Optus lately. Only way I can show my disappointment is to close my accounts. My mobile is the last service on my account and this isn't helping ..  :/

Secondly I just want to use my phone as it was intended to be used. Features were not available at launch and still aren't because we haven't received updates. I want my phone to be secure, I want updates to the camera software etc. That's not too much to ask is it ? For a $1600 phone I think we deserve that.

@Dazkatmaka11 Well to be sure the only thing we're certain of here is that you don't know how qualified I am Smiley Happy Optus publishes the full contract terms on its website. There's nothing in there I can see promising to provide FW updates. As a general rule most companies try make it clear the area they have no direct control over. For example Optus doesn't promise what specific Fetch channels will be shown. Likewise future improvements to products and firmware updates etc. are beyond their control. Products are sold as is and if you want believe Huwai when they say they'll fix it in the future that doesn't oblige Optus. Similarly it appears Optus has tried to imlpiment serveral more recent FWs but for some reason they are not compatible with Optus.

@Mekamayhem I agree its not an unreasonable expectation but its not an obligation. Personally I'd look to the manufacturer who is essentially selling a faulty product with the promise it will be fully operational in the future. It seems other Telcos are putting more effort into certifying updates faster so perhaps choosing them is the only way to get a better outcome on this issue.

@ALLAN24, Dan's on secondment atm I believe so you may not get a reply from him.

@petergdownload like I said 2 sets of legally qualified government bodies have already decided on this who are 100% More qualified than you. So unless you know all the specific details regarding the issues and what they have investigated shut the hell up.

Also optus have not released or tested any firmware and have not tried to release any as they DO NOT HAVE A SOFTWARE LICENCE FROM HUAWEI AND NEVER HAVE FOR THE MATE 20 PRO.

This was confirmed Thursday by a senior manager at optus.
