Latest Android updates

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 07/01/2019. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Please provide explanation on why huawei mate 20 pro has been pushed back. I was willing to cut some slack last month for the security update being over a month late. But with this update being pushed to late January security patch for 9.0.0.146 will be over 2mth old.

I've installed the XZ Premium Android 9 update.

Works well, a bit snappier and some things work differently, like copy and paste. They've fixed some WiFi connection and icon issues I've noticed.

A little disappointed Optus didn't enable WiFi calling on this firmware but it otherwise looks like a solid update.

Hi all, I've tried to address all of you guys, I'm sorry I've missed someone.

That's a fair comment. I'll try my best to get an explanation for Mate 20 Pro delay @SteveV. .

As for the 9.0 update for the Galaxy S9 range, I've read a couple of articles on the topic @rizwanw

"Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ users across Europe and the Middle East are starting to receive the update to Android Pie. This wasn’t expected until mid-January, according to Android Police, but the rollout has begun early."

Source*

https://ausdroid.net/2018/12/26/android-pie-rollout-samsung-galaxy-s9-s9-begins-updated-release-sche...

Given that it's only just been pushed out in the countries mentioned above, I can't confirm when we'll receive the update. As always, I'll keep you guys updated

@KangLee  testing was completed on the 04/01/18. It’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively. I imagine that you'll receive the update within the next coming weeks.

@Wattsy, I'll reach out and ask if it's the stock version we're selling. I'm going to say it's unlikely, but we'll find out.

@Slartibartfast6, that's a stock version of the XZ (non-Optus brand)? I've reached out to testing I've been advised that Optus hasn't received the pie update for the XZ. Can you guys confirm if that's an Optus supplied handset?

@theonlywoody, I'm quoting AUSDROID again, but they've gone out with the 9.0 release schedule for the Galaxy range.

"Android Pie Update Schedule (stock non-carrier branded)"

  • S9 and S9+ (January 2019)
  • Note9 (February 2019)

I'd hope that we'd receive an update from Samsung at a later stage this year.

So have optus sent the mate 20 Pro firmware back to Huawei for release or are you still tinkering with something that really doesn't need to be tinkered with?

If you are bon sending it back till late January then we won't see it until mid February wgiwh is totally unacceptable.

I suggest you start work on 9.0.0.171 like NOW.

Meanwhile while we are waiting till end of January for Mate 20 Pro .146 Optus firmware, the rest of the world is rolling out .182. Biggest change is it adds a selectable Super Macro mode, which is important to me. As Optus are taking about 2 months between updates, this means we will likely be getting .182 around the start of April. I don't want to wait this long, so I'll be updating using the FH method instead (once it is Google pay/safety net approved). Very few carriers in the world are still on .122, with most on .153 or .177. This has gotta be the worst software support I've ever seen for a newly released flagship product. Cheers Optus!

Dazkatmaka11

‎2019-01-08 08:42 PM

Their support is really pathetic. They don't even respond to problems. I've been having issues with optus sports, all they do is say reinstall the app, try a different device..bla bla bla. I did all that before I even put in an error case lodgement. Then they reckon that they can't do anything about it, but they have passed it to the technical team..... which like the software team is none existant.

4 cases I lodged in 6 weeks one was closed without any intervention..thanks for nothing. The other 3 are still waiting for someone to Fix the issues.

Just stop medling with the furfirmw and release the unbranded version, then you can make the one firmware tester you have redundant.

@Dan_C the note 9 release of android 9 has already, officially brought forward to January.  Pretty sure I read that on Ausdroid also.

They also have this article (link provided) from 7th January, noting zero activity on note 9/android 9 upgrade from all major aussie telcos, which is what lead me here.

@Dan_C you acknowledged the importance of an explanation on the delay of the mate 20 pro firmware last Tuesday and still nothing. Meanwhile you've got firmware going out that your team isn't even aware of but can't answer a simple question, for all the grief and stirring I gave @Dazkatmaka11 I'm starting to come round, seems like the customers are nothing but a joke to the firmware team. Dazkatmaka11

@SteveV @Optus @Dan_C@@ it is really pathetic from optus and Huawei Australia for that matter. This is a new handset and requires all the bugs and issues plus any improvements patching as a priority, so there should be an urgency to roll out to all handset owners.

Maybe in 6 months after everything has kind of settled down and most of the issues are ironed out I wouldn't really be so phased about constant updates, unless it's Android Q. 😁

When are you going to start working on 9.0.0.171 for the mate 20 Pro, you should start chasing Huawei for the firmware. This is a very critical update and has brought a massive improvement for lots who have already received it.

I will be expecting you to release .171 by the end of February at the very latest.

@Optus@Dan_C it is coming to the end of the 8th day without any explanation on the delay. It is now the proposed release date as per the last firmware blog for the mate 20 pro "early to mid January" prior to the still unexplained delay. I am starting to believe there is no software team I think it's just one casual employee who works one day a month.

Wow surely you can't be serious, still no reply. For a telecommunications company you sure don't know how to pick up the phone and ask a simple question from the software testing team as to why the updates are delayed.

There's another firmware version pushed out by Huawei, and we can't even get this one from 6 weeks ago.

Always a decent month or more after release until Optus finally push the update to customers, and by that time the next version is already on the horizon. Why bother waiting with a rinse and repeat process.

I have just spoken to a team member at optus who went away and investigated what's going on and basically we are just being given the same old crap, optus testing bla bla bla.

Maybe we may get 9.0.0.171 sometime before Christmas, which is sad because Android Q is starting to raise its head and will probably be released by August. So optus might release Q in 2021. We at the hands of the useless software testing team and the monkeys that runs this forum.I might have to take this to a higher level and somehow get senior directors of optus and Singtel involved.

LOL I find it interesting that the complaints are about customer service to existing customers regarding updates. Optus dont care about you anymore really, they have you in a contract, proof of this is the current discounting of flagship phones on plans that is only available to new customers. As im an existing customer and wanted to upgrade my 10 pro to a 20pro I wouldnt get the discounted rate, so much for loyalty.

I have just called Optus Corporate office and was put through to the escalation team, they are going to take this issue to higher management and find out why we as customers are not being looked after with the latest updates in a timely manner, they will also be showing the management this thread which they looked at and have seen the lack of response and effort on @Dan_C part and will be taking the matter up with the necessary people.

9.0.0.171 should be obtained and worked on and be available for customer download by the 28th February 2019 or there will be hell raised. And 171 isn't even the latest version anymore.

Another point I mention if we are paying for the handset then it should be unbranded.

You don't purchase a car on finance then drive around for 3 years with the dealership name all over the car, you also have no obligation to take it for service or upgrade work to the same dealer as long as it's an authorised entity it can be taken there.

So we should be receiving the firmware version straight from the Huawei Servers when they are released instead of waiting for 3 months.

Wattsy
by Member Wattsy

@Dazkatmaka11, Did you mention to the corparates that it might be in their best interests (cheaper) to not bother with branding to do away with all this hassle?
Dazkatmaka11
by Regular Contributor
‎2019-01-21 01:37 PM

@Wattsy  He said that he thought it was straight from the manufacturer, I told him how it works and said if you buy a handset outright from a store then put an optus sim in you get the firmware version from Huawei and there is no problem with the usability on the network, but because it is branded, optus think that they have to tinker with it, if you just unbranded the handsets and let us receive it from Huawei you wouldn't need a software testing team to play around for 3 months.

9.0.0.171 started rolling out 4/01/19 and here we are still waiting for a version which rolled out 7/12/18

@Optus @Dan_C Really Pathetic Service and Customer Care. Optus should be embarrassed.

Yeah I've been monitoring his activity too. He is literally getting tagged so there is no way he doesn't know there is activity here.

9.0.0.183 is now certified and officially rolling out, someone in Australia has received it and posted a screenshot it now has improved the camera and added a super macro mode. And added 1x 3x 5x zoom for wide angle. Improvements to smooth out gestures also.

This is the kind of things we are missing out on because Optus are as useless as tits on a bull.

@Optus Such an outcry for Mate 20 Pro support, would be great if someone could respond and make these updates a priority. Word of mouth is so powerful these days with the assistance of social media, I could not see myself recommending Optus to anyone at this stage .

@Dazkatmaka11 @Dan_C is currently curled up in a foetal position under the desk due to immense workload requested of him to provide a simple explanation

So for whatever reason @Dan_C has not gotten back to us in what some of you deem to be a reasonable timeframe.
I sit there clicking rerfresh on the blog hoping to see a response too, or a new blog-post with the next lot of update information.
@Dan_Chas a job and I'm sure he does it as best as he can.

I feel like things here are getting a bit personal, these are real people on the other end.

@MattW 2 weeks to pick up a phone call the software team and ask why there's a delay. A 5 minute job.

I operate a maintenance business and if I treated my customers like this, or tell them they have to wait months while I test their product, I'd be flat out of business and bankrupt..

Totally unacceptable, if Dan can't handle the workload then pass it on to one of the several thousand other Optus employees to fix it up.

It's not rocket science.

I have worked at Optus in similar area and it's not that simple to be honest.

Based on my experience, timeline and schedule of OS update completely control by device manufacturer and only come to carrier when it's ready for testing. Carriers get few weeks advance notice that they are coming but it's also depends on the device manufacturers.

And also carrier doesn't seem to get much to say on the timeline.

I do agree around poor services that we get from carrier and manufacturer around OS support on branded phone as they are really poor at the moment but you shouldn't really put this on just one person on this forum as he is just doing his best within corporate culture.

You should escalate this to not only to carrier but also to device manufacturer as they are one that actually controlling this schedule.

@Kingbilly78 I know right, the last 2 people I spoke to said it comes from the manufacturer, I said no it is tinkered with by optus for 2 months or more supposedly testing it on the network, when in reality there's no need to be testing it. Then I direct them to this blog and they proceed to tell what I can already read above. Truth is that the left hand has no friggin clue what the right hand is doing!

Mate 20 Pro .... Late January, well it's the 23rd it's into late January now!

The uk, Israel, Morrocco and India all received the .183 update.
