Android Software Updates – 03/07/2017

Posted by (Online Community Manager)

Optus

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device.  The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country.  Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of 03/07/2017. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Hi Optus team, can you please clarify the following for the S7 and S7 Edge: Update to enable VoLTE  & Google security patch for 7.0 – Testing expected to complete -  mid-late July | Galaxy S7 has had VoLTE since May last year. Thanks!

@danz207 my s6 edge + has had volte since about then too but strangely is listed as one of the things to be added to the nougat update that has yet again disappeared off the update list.

@Optus what is happening with the nougat update now ? Stop treating your customers like a joke and tell us all EXACTLY whats going on and an exact date for the update.  Dont tell me to look at the update process info . I already know it .

@Jack_gecko I'm afraid we only have available what's listed in this article. We haven't received 7.1 yet but will post an update as soon as we do.

@danz207 The latest update had issues with these services so we've been working with Samsung on a new update.

@Missrippa I would love to give you an exact date, but I'm afraid it would already be listed if it was available. Last I heard there were network compatibility issues, and we are working with Samsung to have it fixed. I'm sorry if their staff have told you otherwise but this is definitely the case.

This is absolutely *MODERATED* ridiculous! I was tricked into picking up an Optus-branded Samsung Galaxy S6 when I thought I was purchasing a completely unlocked one online. Little did I come to find out that Optus has done nothing but deter anyone from receiving updates so they can make more money off of upgrades. I don't even live in Australia, and I picked up this phone online simply so I could obtain it in a color not offered in my country. I've been following this update blog for the last 2 years waiting for changes. So far I have received a grand total of ONE...yes, ONE...update in that period that Optus has approved. I know Samsung is notorious for being slow, but this is just a joke. Optus is the ONLY carrier in the ENTIRE WORLD having these problems, and there is NOTHING special about its network that could cause this. Optus is scamming every single customer with false promises so they'll just get tired of waiting and upgrade. It is obviously not a hardware problem since the same models running on the same network technology work just fine. Optus, you are a joke of a company, and I am so glad that you do not exist in my country. I wouldn't even bother considering you based upon your horrible reputation. If I could rid my phone of you without risking losing everything, I would have done it two years ago when I first found your problems. Oh, and thanks for lying about every single update you've produced thus far. I love how there isn't even an update pending for the S6 anymore. It completely fails to exist now. (The problems aren't the updates. The problems are you, the company, that is taking advantage of its customers and those forced to use your software).

I'm confused about the S8 update. I received an update a few days ago which was the June security update along with changes to the navigation bar.

Is the S8 update listed here another update? July security update?

Missrippa

@Toomeythere was an update listed but its disappeared. management at samsung have stated officially that theyve not been requested  by optus to do anything to the nougate update the the S6 series or had any feedback from optus about the update  so cut the crap.  stop treating your customers like idiots. we are far from that and im gathering from what ive read quite afew of the people who are on this blog have a serious level of IT experience.

@SugarD-xim about as fed up as you are. ive been following these update blogs the whole time ive had a samsung and yes you're correct - nothing theyve published to this page is even anywhere near correct . optus should be embarrased of their treatment of their customers. . Shows how little they think of the people who actually fund them. without customers there is no optus - they should remember that .

I called Optus about the Galaxy S6 (edge for me) disaster several times last week. I was promptly told there was nothing that Optus could do.

On two seperate occasions I was 'transferred to someone who can help' that turned out to be Samsung Australia's customer service (whom confirmed that all Australian providers received the Galaxy S6 edge Nougat update at the same time). Another time I was disconnected after being transferred to 3 seperate departments at Optus, all of which stated that it is out of Optus' hands.

As it has been several months without a security update and over a month since Telstra and Vodafone updated the Galaxy S6 edge to Nougat, I've placed a complaint with the ACCC. This is unfair and I hope it is investigated fully. Needless to say, this is my last Optus product.

Bruh it says nothing now for the galaxy note 5. I've waited patiently now, was so close to just installing a custom rom but i need samsung pay and recently samsung rolled 7.0 to Australia and carriers had it out within that month except optus. I was eager checking software updates everyday for mine but straight trash never receiving it as apparently some 'problem' with the software that optus found in which you didnt disclose what it was (i call total bs). Honestly by the time i receive this update my plan will probably be done which cya mate sick of this.

How come there is no Huawei P10 listed?  I have the B130 software version of this phone. I know it's up to B153 after serveral updates. Current B130 version has an annoying screen dimming bug that occurs when using gmail and chrome....

To those of you waiting for S6 updates, I would recommend you just flash the generic Australian "XSA" firmware onto your device.  For both the S6 and the S6 Edge, it has been released since about April and supports VoLTE on the Optus network. I have since upgraded my phone and plan, but when I used the S6 Edge I was sick of waiting for Optus to deliver the update so went ahead and flashed the generic XSA firmware right over the top of my phone and didn't lose any of my data.

I agree 100% with the other poster regarding the Note 5 and Im in exactly the same position. One of the earlier updates said there were Network problems and Samsung were looking at it. This update there is no information.

I want to install Nougat version and thinking of installing a custom ROM but prefer the offical update from Optus and also need to use NAB Pay which does not work on Custom ROM.

I understand Optus has alot of phones to test upgrades on, but surely it should not take this long.  Have Optus considered a Beta program where the users get earlier access to updates?

Thanks Scott M.

The P10 is on version B153 from the manufacturer and has had a few previous releases between B153 and the current B130 that is installed on my handset.  The major bug i see is the auto dimming. The main screen is bright and vivid, but open up Chrome or Gmail as an example, and it dims....

tizza42
by New Contributor tizza42

hi everyone - I contacted an Optus person via Live Chat to raise an offical complaint.  His name was Denzel (Washington?  Moonlighting from his actor career?) who has promised to "email the back end team" and then email me with their response.  That was less than 24 hours ago - so I'm cutting them a bit of slack.  However, not breath-holding on this.

I think the people from Optus replying on this blog are mushrroms just like us - just a different variety.  They are probably in the dark and fed *MODERATED*

If they just read what people are writing here - you can flash XSA on your "Optus" S6 and it works on the Optus network.  So, you don't have to be frikkin' Einstein to figure out that it has to be the Optus bloatwear process that is rogering the update...

I have a Note 5 also - still on the Jan security update. This is rediculous, my mothers Optus S5 has had several security updates in the time mine has had none and it is a much older phone. Come on Optus, it is getting beyond a joke, have been a customer for over a decade and now seriously considering going elsewhere. At the very least if you can't get the nougat update out in a timely fashion, at least make sure our security updates are current!

Because I use my phone so much for personal and business use, and cannot risk having something happen to it, (nor can I afford to replace it), I have heavily feared flashing it manually, and have waited VERY patiently for Optus to provide updates to it for SEVERAL years. Again, this company is total crap, and I'm tired of waiting. In fact, I'm so tired that as soon as I get a day off from work, I'm taking tolga's advice and I'm going to flash it with the generic XSA ROM to bypass this stupid mess once and for all. (Something I'm incredibly worried about doing, and had resisted against on any of my phones since my very first one in high school back in the mid-2000's). Thanks for nothing Optus. So happy you don't exist in the United States. I would NEVER use your services, even if you were the only company in business. You are an absolute joke. Goodbye, and thanks for nothing.

What warranty? That seriously made me laugh. As I said before, I purchased my phone online, unlocked, and had no idea that it was plagued with software from such a horrible company. I don't even live in Australia. If I did, I wouldn't be worried about a warranty that wouldn't be honored anyway. I'm sure Optus would have no problem scamming me into buying an expensive, new phone by claiming that mine can't be repaired or replaced, just as they do now by lying about software updates so people give in so they can get them through a new device. Nice marketing tactics. They should be ashamed.

While I feel for you since you are just doing your job, and have no control over the completely illegal move Optus is pulling, I had to make that point. I appreciate that you are trying to make us all feel better, but unfortunately the rest of your employer's company doesn't have good intentions like you do.

Either way, I wish you all the best of luck. I'm done with Optus' greed tactics. I have bigger things to worry about than an overseas scam artist full of false promises.

I gave up waiting and flashed a custom rom for Nougat on my Note 5. All ok and it only took me a few hours to get back up and running and NAB Pay is working (not sure how but it is).. There has to be a reason why Optus are holding back on these updates but whatever the reason it is, is it worth getting their customers offside like this? Ive seen this all before, higher management talking up customer service and talking up how good they are going but will not read let alone take action on the posts on this forum.

hi everyone, here's a quick update - Thursday 29 June I last posted, recap: Denzel was going to contact the "back end team" and get back to me... well he hasn't.

Is anyone at Optus even remotely concerned that you are ostracising a large number of your customers?

The Samsung phones awaiting the Nougat update would represent quite a number of your customers.  The people voicing their concern here would represent quite a number of users, who perhaps do not know where to raise their concerns.  The tip of the iceberg so to spesak.

We don't want to be placated.  We want reasonable service for something that we pay for.  All your competitors were able to roll out the upgrade 1-2 months ago.

There is no "technical" argument that will hold water.  Therefore we must consider this as an Optus strategy.

Without further evidence, it is hard to say.  I surmise that Optus are hoping that we will be driven by desparation to upgrade to the new Samsung S8.  If this is the case, then the ACCC should get involved.  In fact, I think I may start this process.

If it is truly a technical issue, then it has to be on the Optus side.  This denotes an ineptitude that is hard to comprehend.

I don't expect an answer from Optus - my last few posts have not received an answer.  If there is an answer, please do not regurgitate the lines of "we can only release it when we get it".  You have it, Samsung says there are no outstanding issues.  Only answer by saying "sorry, we stuffed it up, it should be rolling out in a few days."

Providing the update now is like trying to re-start our hearts with a defibrillator.  It just may bring us back to life.

Well, I gave in and just flashed my phone with the generic, official XSA ROM from Samsung specifically meant for my Samsung Galaxy S6 SM-G920I. It works flawlessly, and I regret not doing it sooner. Now I have Nougat, and I'm not being attacked with Optus' bloatware anymore. Oh, and everything works fine. Just as we all thought, you were full of a very smelly four letter word, Optus. Enjoy losing your customers, you scam artists. I'll be sure to tell all of my Aussie friends to avoid you like the plague that you are upon society. To everyone here, I sincerely wish you good luck with your endeavors. I'm sorry that you were also caught up in this mess. Hopefully with the information now spreading, Optus will be shut down for their unlawful actions, or at least be forced by legal hand to resolve it properly. Tolga, thank you so much for the information you provided. This was my first time ever flashing a ROM on a phone, and because of you, it went off without a hitch. Now I can finally enjoy my phone without worrying about Optus screwing me over anymore. Thank you again. You are awesome! Again, best of luck to everyone here. I'm out! Adios!

No updates for S6? this is just ridiculous. Android is about to move on from Nougat and we are still waiting for the update.

This looks like a deliberate tactic to frustrate users into upgrading.

Its a work phone so i cant flash it else i would have done that months ago. The whole testing process in Optus is a joke!

Like others, this would be my last Optus product. Remember, if there are a few of us writing it here to express our frustration then there are hundreds who are feeling it and probably have silently made up their minds too. New potential customers also read these forums and the whirlpool ones too...get your customer experience team to read those instead of sending out customer satisfaction surveys.

I had issues with VoLTE on my Note 5 as I run my phone as a hotspot for my Android car radio (for GPS maps and traffic updates etc). VoLTE keeps turning the hotspot off to check if there are any networks around it can connect to - even if there are no active calls. My recommendation is to leave it off unless you are in an area of poor coverage

Dear fellow Galaxy S6/S6+ owners. I realise the Optus are not interested in providing updates for older smartphones. Last night I downloaded and flashed the XSA Nougat update. It's an easy process.  I will no longer be following this blog, but I'd like to thank those who appreciated my comments as I appreciated their's. For those of you waiting on Optus, I truly hope that you eventually get the Nougat update. However, my concerns is that the Optus team will also be sloth-like in their rollout of security updates. This is something that is very concerning. Farewell!

Hi @tizza42, this isn't really what we like to hear & I'm sorry this is the case. We are certainly committed to get the updated software but for this we have to rely on the manufacturer as well. With regards to flashing your handset please note this can void warranty of the handset.

@Aman_B warranty or insurance? I'm pretty sure the warranty on an S6  is over. If you're telling me it voids insurance, like of I drop it and the screen shatters, then I'd like to know because I'll investigate the legality of such a requirement.  Looking forward to your reply.

Sorry for the confusion @tizza42. I was referring to warranty  but if your contract is already over then yes the warranty is finished as well (handsets are covered under warranty for the term of the contract) .

tizza42
by New Contributor tizza42
‎2017-07-17 06:22 AM

@Aman_B yes, my phone came off contact in June. So that's why I took this decision. The point is, Optus has to decide if they really want to sell phones on contract. There are options to buy phones on a monthly charge, and get manufacturer updates that tend to be released weeks or even months before Optus roll them out. I do not understand the "testing" you need to do. I believe it is more to do with your customisation process. And believe me here, less is more. I think customers would appreciate this approach.

good luck to all the poor optus customers who are being treated like dirt. I hope you get the update before Android O is released shortly

tizza42
by New Contributor tizza42
‎2017-07-17 08:25 AM

@Aman_B ahh!  There it is!  From your last message "some internal Apps."  This is it.  It's the bloatware that is causing the delay.  There is no problem using the S6 and the Nougat update on the Optus network - this was "proven" weeks/months ago.  Therefore it is as I said - the "customisation" process.  If you design and code the apps well, there should be zero to minimal need to change them.

Don't you understand that it is imperative that we keep up to date with updates - including those that provide better security and protection?  In the future, there could well be the case that an Optus customer - who has been adversely affected via a security defect, sues Optus for failing to provide the security update in a timely manner that would have prevented this.  And Optus will have to explain in court why it has taken months to rollout it out.  In the case of the S6 update to Nougat, Optus is so far behind your competitors that it almost seems like you want your customers to move to another telco.  Nuff sed...

I'd previously been told VoLTE was only possible on optus provided /purchased phones, however samsung confirm it should work and the issue is the carrier. Recent advertisements with Andrew Bolt appear to seek to attract non Optus customers to the 4G Plus network with the speed of Bolt ,i.e. they advertise VoLTE for non Optus origated phones.

YES VODAFONE, a carrier I left for this garbage due to poor reception in my area releases updates more regularly. For a carrier who boast about their "unrivalled network speeds" by once using Usain Bolt as an endorsement your roll outs for android updates speak otherwise. I'll wait until the end of this month for any releases if nothing i'm just going to flash the XSA version and couldn't care otherwise if I lose my warranty. This phone is about to reach its 2 year mark and I have only gotten 2 at most updates, the note 5 is still a solid phone but you guys make it feel like prehistoic bs

My Sony Z5 updated to 7.1.1 nearly 2 weeks ago.

AS usual zero sync between these lists and what is really being delivered.

Why is Optus even bothering if they can't get anywhere near an accurate list.

@tbz g'day i am still waiting for the z5 update any tips?  I have pushed Optus over several of these so-called update lists with the constant answers that they haven't received them from Sony..

@Jack_gecko give optus a call and speak to the IT department. If the update was Released and you haven't received it they may have to push the update direct.i think someone in an earlier thread had the same issue with a different phone when the update was released.

they have updated the blog, just didn't tell us.  have a look in the blog categories for one listed 18.07.2017

this kind of crap is why I left optus

@Jack_geckohi there!   Good to hear. If they dont ring back ring them again. They're not good at ringing back when they say they will. Only of they want money lol

Hope you can get this sorted.

I've been waiting for months now for the update on the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 Edge, it looked like there was some progress and now there are no tentative dates listed.

So I've opted to update from Android Geeks :  http://www.android.gs/update-samsung-galaxy-s6-edge-g925i-to-android-7-0-nougat-manually/

Update is completed and the phone has updated to recent build by OTA on it's own and everything is running perfectly
