Optus

When a new Android Operating System update is announced by Google there are a few steps that take place before it becomes ready for your device. The manufacturer receives the update and customises the software for the device and mobile carriers in each country. Once this is completed they’ll send the update to the carriers for testing.

For more info on this process check out our page:

Android Device Updates - What's The Process?

The below table provides information on the latest Android updates we’ve received for testing and approval as of the 02/10/2018. If no information is listed, it means we haven't received the build or any new details from the manufacturer.

When a version is marked as completed it means testing has been finished on our end and approved.  Each manufacturer has a process for releasing updates to devices and once we approve the update, it’s sent back to the manufacturer to be released through their standard update processes. Generally, updates are rolled out progressively, for example the manufacturers might make the update available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Thanks @Dan_C,

Any chance you can push Huawei to release the mate 10 Pro update?

All good Smiley Happy

Are we talking the recent Android Pie + EMUI 9.0 update for the Mate 10?

A couple of articles out there suggest that Huawei has restricted the update to European users.

Looks like we might have GPU Turbo 2.0 on the horizon (included in the EMUI update).

Just the Optus completed testing version

Well, I've switched back over to Apple. (iPhone 7 Plus) It really sucks that I can't return my Huawei Mate 10 pro. It's only 3 months old so they want me to pay $945 to get out of my contract! Will have to sell it and try to make up the money.

@Dan_C

How long does it take to get the S7 and S7 Edge in the list updated to 8.0?

It has said 7.0 for months now, even though Optus updated them to 8.0.

Many people, including myself have commented on this over a number of blogs, including the previous one.

If people are looking to see what is the current version it is very outdated.

Great! Note8 & Note9 👍

What do you mean "Optus EVS"?!

Is there any update for Galaxy Tab S4? 😊

Thanks.

Eek @KimxK you're right. I've just updated that.

@Jamallandit, are you referring to the Android 9 update? No word on this one yet.

EVS is a codec. It stands for enhanced voice services.

@Dan_C are you suggesting that the EMUI 8.1 update will be skipped in favour of 9.0 or is there a chance we'll see 8.1? Does Huawei communicate general release timeframes by region for EMUI updates? Given Australia is a small market, it wouldn't be unrealistic to think we'll get 9.0 last unless the BLA-L09 and BLA-L29 versions here are identical with the EU versions (supposedly also BLA-L09 and BLA-L29).

Cheers

@bigblue Optus doesn't keep up with the the latest updates. They told me Android 9 won't be released on the mate 10 pro until at least 2020. The BLA-L09 here in Australia is different to the european ones not only because of the region of the firmware (C34) but also because Optus has put their proprietary branding deep into the phone.

@TeddancingThat's really sad about the speculated 2020 EMUI 9/ Android P release. I got the Mate 10 Pro over other phones with Optus on that stellar $59 deal end of last year thinking that the Mate, being a Treble-approved phone, would be receiving updates relatively quickly. Given the overall data inclusion, Optus coverage, and phone cost, I was super impressed at the time.

Now that I am locked in for 24mths, I am really disappointed with the updating of my Mate 10 Pro, especially as I am still sitting on 8.0.0.134 with May security patches and my partner with her older Virgin Huawei P10 has Face Unlock and patches well before me.

At this stage, I'm basically waiting on the Pixel 3 to release and going to buy it or the Pixel 2 outright and get rid of my Mate. I wouldn't even consider New Phone Trade Up (even if Optus get a Mate 20) and am just waiting to get out of contract so I can get timely updates. So sad.

@Djps I was disappointed too, I've had this phone for 3 months but the other day I got given an iPhone 7 Plus. And even though it isn't on paper as good a phone I'm switching. I was always an apple user anyway, going to sell the Huawei, could probably get a good price for it on eBay.

@Teddancing @Djps don't forget your phone is treble compliant. It's inexcusable that Optus is not providing the updates on a more timely basis, and it's made worse by the fact that there's no justification as to why. Security updates at the very least are a big deal and this should be expedited.

I highly suggest that if you're willing to get your feet wet, look at options such as Lineage OS which will get you to Oreo 8.1 now. There's plenty of guides on how to do this safely and in such a way that should you feel the need to roll back to EMUI, you can. If you're really adventurous there's the Android Pie GSI though I would wait until custom rom developers release supported builds.

*Don't forget you need to unlock the bootloader of your phone. This was stopped by Huawei earlier this year but it seems that the discontented users got to them and it's open again for a short while. You need an XDA account to get this process started.

Teddancing
by Member Teddancing

@bigblue They have only restarted bootloader codes on a limited basis for Honor phones not the main Huawei branded ones. I don't think boot codes were ever even available for Australian customers.

As much as i hate optus i really dont believe it will take that long for android p to arrive. This is because if u look at optus' track record the mate 9 recieved android 8 in around mid march of this year. I expect the mate 10 recieve android 9 at around march of 2019

@ed0214 That's what I thought too. But DanC (the moderator) said they'd be testing it through until 2020.

I dont recall him saying that at any of the blogs. Are you aure he was talking about mate 10 or just optus phones in general. It would make sense for older phones like s8 and others to be updated much later hence the 2020 scheduled date

Huawei P9 Oreo?

Other markets have received the update to 8.0

Will Optus push this out at any point?

Anyone got the Galaxy Note 8 September patch yet? My sister got her Sept update for the Galaxy S8 but nothing yet for the note. Just wondering has anyone else got theirs.

Still waiting for the update to be rolled out to huawei mate 10 pro?? I understand once testing has finished that there is a process but it's now over a week in to october and im getting a little bit impatient 🤔

GuyCS

Hey @Spugsy in most cases, these updates are rolled out progressively. For example the update is normally made available for a small number of users (i.e. 5%) initially; then if no unforeseen problems pop up, it’ll gradually be made available to more and more users over the following weeks.

Apologies for the delay, but you should see this update available on your device over the next few weeks (as long as no unforeseen issues arise). Appreciate your patience.

@Djps my thought exactly . So disappointing with optus update. I was planing to upgrade and get mate 20 Pro if optus gonna have one but with this update, I would prefer buy outright and get faster update. Shame

Great.... Expensive phone(Note 8), and software is still a year behind most manufacturers. And in October and still haven't had Septembers security update? Won't be going anywhere near a Samsung device again until they are up to par with the other manufacturers.

@Smash @Tomchn Thanks Smash. I checked my update status and I am now finally updated with August security patches and face unlock on .137. Thank you Optus.

What I find hilariously ironic is that now there is no exclusivity on Pixel and Optus has started preorders for the Pixel 3 range. Despite saying after my last post that I would not be New Phone Trading Up here I am considering it haha.

Not sure what's happened, but avoid upgrading the J5 Pro to 8.1.0.

It has forced my phone to next to ZERO download speed on 4G/3G/2G/Auto mode - so forced to set it to 3G only mode for data.

Have a second J5 Pro (purchased as a spare same time as my first - 4 months ago). That one is still on 7.0 and has fast proper download speeds on 4G/3G/2G/Auto mode.

Hey Optus, can you roll back my Optus locked Galaxy J5 Pro phone?
