SOS Only & Searching appears on new prepaid Sim

Ive just bought a new prepaid mobile phone sim which was activated by an Optus Agent from the store I bought it from. When I got home to insert it on my iphone 4S and the message “Searching” followed by “SOS Only” kerps appearing where the Carrier should be reflected. Ive tried everything that I ciuld think of like turning it off and turned it back on again; turning on airplane mode & off again several times, and resetting my network system but still its on SOS Only mide. I need to use my phone badly, can someone help me please.
